THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE.
we went to a local street fair over the weekend where there were old-fashioned fire trucks on display. as soon as i spotted them i squealed and excitedly pointed them out to holden thinking that he would be beyond thrilled to get up close and personal to his one of his favorite toys. i took his hand and we ran over to them. holden it’s a fire truck! your favorite! he looked up at the truck, but instead of what i expected to be amazement at a life-size version of his favorite toy, his vision immediately narrowed in on the orange cones surrounding the trucks. he ran closer, by-passing the fire truck all together, and headed straight for the cones. we spent the next half hour, crouched next to the fire truck (that was completely ignored) entertaining ourselves by stuffing as many leaves and sticks as possible into the top of the cones. when we were finally able to drag him away from the cones, we attempted to check out the rest of the fair, but got stuck at every planter along the street as holden dug through them on his hunt for rocks. this is kind of how our days usually go. we plan to do something that we think holden will love and realize that sitting in a pile of wood chips, picking up the fallen leaves on the sidewalk, or collecting sticks makes him just as happy as the elaborate street fair or vintage fire truck.
he is the best adventurer.
no matter where we are or what we are doing, he will always find a way to entertain himself, making the simplest, most everyday-ordinary activities, inspiring and fun.
sometimes you don’t need fancy toys or a constant schedule of activities.
sometimes the best things in life really are free.
thank you holden for the constant reminder.
